It Takes a Village to Raise a Child – A Global Village in a Digital World!
Children born into this interconnected world are now considered digital natives. They are growing up surrounded by technology, with online platforms an integral part of their daily lives. While the online domain offers a world of educational and entertainment opportunity, it also presents very real risks – right in front of us. It is crucial now for parents and caregivers to take even steps that help ensure the safety of their children as they explore the vast and dynamic online world.
The Center for Cyber Safety and Education is keenly aware of online risks targeting children and has embraced the mission to support students, teachers, and the public to safeguard their online presence. The Center, together with leading cybersecurity professionals from ISC2, created a workshop presentation to help equip parents and caregivers with cyber safety skills to guide their children to a safer online experience.
Cyber Catalyst is delighted to have led the opportunity to make the workshops, Keep Kids Safe Online, available to military families across Canada and OUTCAN with the support of the Education Team, Military Family Services of Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services. The MFS Education team is tasked with supporting CAF families as they transition from one educational system/community to another. This included families within Canada but also those posted outside the country and preparing to return to Canada. This means that our reach was very broad, and we had access to a wide range of parent communities – English and French. Parents had the chance to learn how to safeguard their child’s personal information and privacy online. Most important, they got guidance on how to open the dialogue about online safety with their kids, gaining insights into recognizing and handling online threats, and establishing readily available parental control options.
Our presenters included Canadian military veterans studying and working in the cyber realm who welcomed the chance to deliver these presentations. It takes a bit of commitment to fulfill such an expansive undertaking and through the volunteer services of Veterans and ISC2 members @Roger Payne, and @Melissa Baker, we were able to provide workshops covering six time zones and reaching to more than 42 military family communities in Canada, Europe, and the Middle East.
